Well we got through it !! After a long nervy wait we have booked out place in Brazil. Needing to win to be sure of qualification, England certainly kept us on Tenterhooks. The Three Lions had plenty of chances in the first half before Wayne Rooney eventually opened the scoring just before half time, heading the ball past the otherwise excellent Szczesny.
But the single goal wasn’t enough to quieten the 18,000 plus Polish fans that had made their way into Wembley. I truly feared the worst when Lewandowski raced clear but fired wide with only Joe Hart to beat.
I thought it was going to be one of those games when Townsend rattled the crossbar with a thumping left-footed strike, before Welbeck somehow blasted a shot wide from inside the six yard box when it seemed easier to score. Welbeck on more than one occasion seemed to be tying himself up with his own feet and failing to gets shots off.
Rooney almost had a second after 66 minutes only for Szczesny to tip away the England striker’s long-range strike that was bound for the far corner, while Sturridge was also denied by the Arsenal keeper once more.
With nerves jangling and everyone on the edge of their seats it took captain Gerrard to deliver the decisive blow that guaranteed the three points England needed to top the group and book our air tickets to Brazil.
Well done lads !!!
