As a young player, Gunnlaugsson made several appearances for the Icelandic international youth teams. Arnar made his debut for Iceland in an April 1993 friendly match against the United States. He went on to earn 32 caps, scoring three goals between 1993 and 2003. His last international match was an April 2003 friendly match against Finland in which he was substituted with Veigar Páll Gunnarsson.
Arnar Bergmann Gunnlaugsson cost Leicester £2.1 Million from Bolton in 1999. He quickly became known as the Super Sub, scoring all his goals after coming on as a substitute for the Club.
He scored only four goals in his time at Filbert Street but at least two of them were against rivals Derby and one against Villa. Some put his bad luck down to his Squad Number 13. He made 40 appearances for City but only 13 starts “Is that a coincidence of was it fete”?. It wasn’t too long before his spell at City ended and off to Stoke he went, on loan at first then permanently later on.
After this he returned to Iceland and finally finished off at IA then as assistant Manager at Haukar.
